Sophia is the Holy Wisdom, and she appears in the book of Job (28) as a hidden treasure whose whereabouts are only known to God.  In the book of Proverbs, she is a preacher and prophet who cries out for justice and awakening.  “Whoever finds me finds life,” declares Sophia, “and receives favor from the Lord” (8:35).

The Divine Feminine is found in parallel forms across the major religions, in her unmanifest and manifest forms. “She can do all things” and “renew all things”  (Wis 7:27).  In Buddhism similar praises abound for the Perfect Wisdom, Prajna Paramita, who like Sophia is feminine.  The Goddess Tara presides over the seas of Samsara to the shores of Nirvana, and chanting her 108 names brings the same multitude of blessings that Sophia confers. Similarly, in the Hindu tradition, Sri Aurobindo elucidates the magnificent powers and blessings of the Divine Mother in her manifestations as Maheshvari, MahaKali, MahaLakshmi, and MahaSaraswati.

In all traditions the Divine Mother proclaims, “Those who love me, I love, and those who search for me will find me.  Riches and honor are with me, my fruits are better than gold. Those that love me, I will fill their treasures.” (Prov 8:17-21).  The book of Baruch (3:37) prophesied that Holy Wisdom would appear upon earth and live among human beings.  Sophianic tradition affirms that Sophia incarnated on earth as Mary.

To discover the Divine Feminine, Aurobindo shows the way: “Follow your soul and not your mind, your soul that answers to the Truth.  She will free the godlike elements in you and shape everything into an expression of Divine Nature.”
