Come learn and be inspired from some of our area’s greatest professional talents in the music business, Ron and Sue Irving. This workshop is open to all, from beginners to seasoned song writers.
Here’s how the day will unfold:
Morning Session: Introduction period. Instructors get to know the songwriting levels of attendees, etc.
The craft and mechanics of songwriting: Structure of the various forms, rhyme schemes, grammatical do’s and don’t’s, conveying a clear message, etc.
Writing from a title: Interactive discussion. Putting thought into the subject matter prior to writing the song.
Song ideas – where do they come from? Which comes first – the melody or the lyrics?
Song Critiques: Participants who wish to perform their song (1 only) or have a cd version played will be invited to present them for the critique session where constructive encouragement will be offered using the tools presented in the morning session. This is interactive with instructors and the group with positive results. Those wishing to play their song live or from a CD MUST provide 2 typed copies of the lyrics.

Ron Irving is a veteran Canadian Songwriter, Producer and Music publisher with over 100 songs recorded worldwide, in seven languages. Ron’s songs have been recorded by International stars Anne Murray and Michael Bublé, US country stars Lee Greenwood and Terri Clark, Asian superstar Jacky Cheung, South African Idol Anke ,Euro Diva Jennifer Rush, K- Pop boy band Shinwa, Germany’s Pop trio “Trademark”, and numerous others. His songs have received multiple awards and nominations for Song and Single of the Year from Canada’s performing rights society, SOCAN, the Canadian Music Publishers Association, and the Canadian Country Music Association. Ron’s songs have been used in feature films, TV series, song folios, TV Commercials, karaoke and ring tones. As an Independent Publisher Ron’s song catalogue is represented globally through his sub-publishing partnerships with major companies covering Europe, Asia, South America and Africa. Ron currently serves on the Executive board of the Songwriters Association of Canada and is a faculty member of the SAE Institute in Vancouver teaching songwriting.
Sue Irving has a long history in the Canadian music industry and is highly regarded by her peers. Sue worked for 16 years immersed in the performing rights world as the Administrative assistant to the National VP of Member Relations at SOCAN, Canada’s performing rights society, representing over 70,000 composers and music publishers. During her tenure at SOCAN, Sue acquired extensive knowledge of the revenue streams, administration, protection and promotion of music copyrights. Prior to SOCAN, Sue was the executive director of the B.C. Country Music Association and is currently serving on the Board of Directors of that association. Today, Sue handles administration for SueCo music publishing a company she jointly owns with her husband Ron Irving.
Songs from the SueCo Music catalogue have been recorded by artists in Canada, the U.S. Europe, South Africa, Japan and S.E. Asia. With her own keen sense of ‘what works’ in a song Sue is applying her administrative and creative skills in establishing SueCo Music as an internationally recognized music publishing company. She also works with Ron in leading workshops and seminars focusing on songwriting and music publishing.
