History Of Unity
Originally a prayer and study group, Unity was founded by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore at the beginning of the 1880s in Kansas City, Missouri.
Unity was born from Charles and Myrtle's attempts to heal their physical bodies. Through their experiences, they came to believe that every person is an expression of God and that our thoughts have creative power.
Eventually, Unity evolved from its roots in Transcendentalism and Christian Science into the New Thought movement. In the beginning, Unity taught healing and prosperity principles that, for their time, were incredibly radical (though perhaps not by today's standards).
Today, Unity continues this tradition with over 600 ministries worldwide, sharing its spiritual message of love that's inspired countless wisdom teachers and celebrities over the years to live rich and meaningful lives.

New to Unity of Vancouver?
Unity of Vancouver is a supportive and accepting community for people who consider themselves spiritual but not religious. We honour the universal truth in all religions and empower each individual to find their own spiritual path.
So much more than a Sunday gathering, Unity offers ongoing opportunities for enrichment and connection within our spiritual community. Wherever you may be coming from, Unity will meet you where you are and lift you up, empowering you to heal and live a meaningful life.
Beliefs and Teachings
Unity has no dogma or set of beliefs. Instead, the Fillmores compiled a list of essential principles that flow from all the world's major religions. Later on, Unity leaders summarized this list into five core principles, which inform our teachings and practice to this very day.
Unity's 5 Core Principles
- God is the source and creator of all. There is no other enduring power. God is good and present everywhere
- We are spiritual beings. The spirit of God lives within each person; therefore, all people are inherently good.
- We create our life experiences through our way of thinking.
- There is power in affirmative prayer, which we believe increases our awareness of God.
- Knowledge of these spiritual principles is not enough. We must live them.
